Terms and Conditions for Smart Meter Data Access

Switchee Limited (www.switchee.com) requests your consent to access, store and process your energy consumption, generation and tariff information.

What information is collected?

If you agree, the following information will be requested from your smart meter on a daily or more frequent basis:

  • Energy consumption & generation information for both gas and electricity (where available)
  • Energy tariff information containing information on the price you are charged for energy consumed
  • Information identifying the energy meter (number, location, type)

In addition to collecting future consumption and tariff data we may also collect up to 12 months of historic data for your home to allow us to understand how your home’s energy efficiency is changing over time.

How will this information be used?

Switchee will combine data from your smart meter with other data we hold (including heating system usage and weather data) as follows:

  • to help you and your landlord better understand your home’s performance (for example by understanding the effectiveness of your home’s insulation)
  • to deliver energy cost savings and efficiencies to you in co-operation with your landlord
  • to identify potential issues (such as a problem with your heating system driving increased energy usage)
  • to provide, develop and improve our products and services to ensure that you and your landlord are receiving the best service

In addition, we may use data from your smart meter in a non-identifiable form for research purposes. For example, we may use aggregated information about the average energy consumption across all homes to gauge Switchee’s energy savings. This data set is cleared of all personal identifiable data (anonymised) and hence your contribution cannot be identified.

Sharing this information

We may share smart meter data and results of analysis with your landlord to help them target the most effective improvements to your home. We will retain data for as long as your landlord retains a contract with us, to allow your landlord to understand how your home’s energy efficiency has changed over time.

We may share your data with partner organisations to contribute to our analysis. These partners will not be able to use your data for other purposes. In addition, they will not retain any personal identifiable data once analysis is complete (data is deleted or anonymised).

We will collect data from your smart meter via our partner n3rgy data limited (n3rgy.com).

Your rights

n3rgy data limited provides full visibility and control of the information you have shared with Switchee via a consumer portal (n3rgy.com/consumer) where you can:

  • Review which organisations you have granted access to
  • Download a copy of your data held by n3rgy data limited
  • Withdraw consent for any or all of the organisations listed*

* If you withdraw consent from all organisations, n3rgy data limited will also remove all of your identifiable data from their platforms.

All consumption, generation and tariff information gathered by n3rgy data limited will also be cleared of all personal identifiable data (anonymised) and pooled within a data set which is made available to all organisations who use the n3rgy data limited service. This enables us together with our customers to better understand the way we use, generate and pay for energy, with the intent to further improve our nation’s energy efficiency and carbon reduction. Due to the nature of anonymisation used, it is not possible to identify your data from this wider set, and therefore to remove your contribution.

You may also withdraw consent or make requests concerning your personal data by contacting Switchee’s Data Privacy Manager via:

Freephone: 0800 133 7957

If you withdraw consent, Switchee will inform n3rgy and will cease to collect data from your smart meter. You may additionally request that Switchee delete from our systems existing data collected from your smart meter.

Switchee will contact you at least once every 2 years to re-confirm your consent. We will consider your consent to be withdrawn if you do not explicitly provide new consent when we ask.
